Shavuot - Every festival is an opportunity to explore the themes of ‘tzedekah’ (charity) and ‘tzedek’ (justice), in theory and in practice. Shavuot, the festival that commemorates the giving of the Torah (the covenant) is no different. Shavuot is related to social action in many ways. Liberal Judaism has created a Shavuot pack that could focus on the environment, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender) issues, how we treat others, especially in respect to world Jewry or economic justice. The options for demonstrating how our Jewish festivals link to our values of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) are endless. This pack will focus on world hunger as the theme most associated with Shavuot, and hopefully the reasons for this will become apparent as people work through the sections.
